Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.

It is so great that M$ finally shows up in the disputes, not a good sign for Sam himself either who is not a office person

I deeply regret my participation in the board’s actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we’ve built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company.

Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a modified board seemingly sans mutineers. Is it over now?

OpenAI (@OpenAI) on X

We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo.

We are collaborating to figure out the details. Thank you so much for your patience through this.

So if I understand the story so far, Ilya and the researchers are generally annoyed that every time they make some progress, then Sam grabs it and deploys it to production with reckless abandon. Then, Helen writes a paper where she blasts OpenAI for doing so.

Sam say’s “don’t shit on us, we’re gonna be rich.”

Ilya and the move-slow-ers say “We’re supposed to be the fire alarm that stops the machine before it destroys humanity. “

Sam says, ‘Well, I’m the CEO, bitch.’

So the move-slow-ers say, “OK, you’re fired,” essentially pulling the fire alarm.

Then Satya, a bunch of investors, and a surprising number of employees side with Sam and say “don’t shit on us, we’re gonna be rich.” They force the move-slow-ers to step down from the board, and get back to business.

So the board which was supposed to be the safety check against a rampant AGI pulled the fire alarm, but instead of the machine coming to a halt, it just fired the board and kept on moving fast.

Sam is not responsible for doing so, it is not too late to stop training right now
