@Erik Osterman (Cloud Posse) Hi Eric Greetings from India, Newbie to Devops/Configuration as Code. Found you through your Github repo researching Terraform scripts

Hi everyone, where is the best place to get started for setting up staging, prod envs? I looked through “Cold Start” on the docs page but that seems different from the “reference-architecture” that is on github. I am a bit confused on where exactly I should start from. Thanks!
@casey sorry about that. Documentation is definitely lagging as we’re moving very fast.
If you want to setup a time for next week, I can walk you through what it all looks like. https://calendly.com/cloudposse

favorite quote from the video:
“The commands don’t really make sense unless you understand what’s going on under the hood.
Normally this is a huge red flag…DO NOT USE THIS SOFTWARE if you have to understand the internals.
But it turns out it’s easier to understand git from the inside out.
This is because the interface is so bad.
(insert even more excuses)…”
This is why I use hg
over git
: the tools I choose to use everyday should “make sense”.

hey folks
I’m checking out the reference architecture setup
great work, it’s really nice.
I can’t seem to locate the code where the admin IAM users are created
The root-iam
module takes a list of user names root_account_admin_user_names
, but looking through all the repos, I can’t find where those users are actually created before being passed to root-iam
woops guess, I’ll move this to #geodesic

awesome!
you’re among some great folks
what are you working on?
Currently working on a new OAuth2 solution, fun times and lots of learning
oh cool, yea, we’ve also been working on some related stuff
probably not related to what you’re working on, but i was excited to see there’s now an official bitly oauth2 fork: https://sweetops.slack.com/archives/CBXSAR45B/p1550038908001200
A reverse proxy that provides authentication with Google, Github or other provider - pusher/oauth2_proxy
Ah cool didn’t know that. I love their oauth2_proxy, we built a similar concept ldap_proxy that was inspired by that

Hello, I am trying to deploy a Elastic Beanstalk application on AWS with terraform using your module, but i don’t fully understand it, in order to deploy the app i need the two modules; https://github.com/cloudposse/terraform-aws-elastic-beanstalk-environment and https://github.com/cloudposse/terraform-aws-elastic-beanstalk-application ?

@Erik Osterman (Cloud Posse) I read somewhere within the chats mentioning about new framework. What is it, just got curious about it.
related to #geodesic?
sorry it was new reference architecture
i have no idea, i am guessing something around env.cloudposee.co repos
Anyways we are again going in a complete overhauling of our current architecture, which is basically make better use of shared vpc. All our vpc/subnets are created in root and then shared with respective accounts to deploy k8 cluster within them.
This is very cost effective as we can openup communications between subnets using route-tables. Single creation of vpc-endpoints. Reduced NAT ips, now dev, alpha, beta are env are using same elastic IP to whitelist etc..
I’m intrigued - would like to learn more
hey, extremely sorry I am not following up slack a lot these days. Do you want me to connect and explain this sometime.
And zero data transfer cost within envs
I like to remind folks that using S3 within a region (even across AZs) is cost-free, except for the GiB*Hrs/mo charge.
@Erik Osterman (Cloud Posse) Do you have an initial guide on setting up atlantis. I think we are suppose to setup atlantis in root env only, is it right?
No - we not in our model. we like to share nothing between accounts.
We like to force the convention that you can only-ever modify one account at a time in a single operation.
so for that reason, we deploy atlantis in each account and pin it to a infra repo.
Let’s sync up again soon: https://calendly.com/cloudposse (next week best)
soooooooooooooooooooooooo much to share and sounds like A LOT to catch up on from your side too.
30 min?
or 1hr

You can now use draft pull requests to clearly tag when you’re coding a work in progress.
oh, nice, and i just turned on the WIP bot for repos where i do such things frequently…
You can now use draft pull requests to clearly tag when you’re coding a work in progress.
@dustinvb ^^ can codefresh ignore triggers on draft PRs?
@daveyu I have not seen this as an option in our triggers yet. Let me check with my engineering team and get you a timeline for support.
This is awesome!!!!
I encourage everyone on our team to open PRs early for transparency, but we end up using the wip
label
making it more clear that this is a DRAFT is great
though I want people to review my drafts… unsure if that’s just my misinterpretation
“cannot be merged” is great.
It’s great to see github releasign more features. feels like it went 2-3 years with nothing new and then a lot in the past 6 mo
The New Microsoft(tm) Effect??
hope so

Is it possible to use this module - terraform-aws-cloudtrail with this one terraform-aws-s3-log-storage?
hey @slm
for cloudtrail we have a separate module for the bucket https://github.com/cloudposse/terraform-aws-cloudtrail-s3-bucket
S3 bucket with built in IAM policy to allow CloudTrail logs - cloudposse/terraform-aws-cloudtrail-s3-bucket
it has required permissions for cloudtrail (terraform-aws-s3-log-storage
does not)
usage example https://github.com/cloudposse/terraform-root-modules/blob/master/aws/audit-cloudtrail/main.tf
Example Terraform service catalog of “root module” invocations for provisioning reference architectures - cloudposse/terraform-root-modules
@Andriy Knysh (Cloud Posse) I saw terraform-aws-cloudtrail-s3-bucket but it didn’t have any of the lifecycle/expiry features that the log_storage did.
the perms seems to be the issue, I noticed log_storage couldn’t work and was looking at the acl/policies to see why.

“The A-Team” took television by force in the early 80s with its super-violent, super-campy portrayal of a team of do-gooding mercenaries. The team of Hannibal, Face, B.A., and Murdock were instant stars and became worldwide television icons. PR awaiting review for prometheus-to-cloudwatch https://github.com/cloudposse/prometheus-to-cloudwatch/pull/12

TIA
@Andriy Knysh (Cloud Posse) can help with
Will review today, thanks @Satadru Biswas
@Satadru Biswas the PR looks good, thanks, just add the new flag to README.yaml
(https://github.com/cloudposse/prometheus-to-cloudwatch/blob/master/README.yaml#L61) and rebuild README
@Andriy Knysh (Cloud Posse) how do I rebuild README?
Do I add the same changes to README.yaml and README.md or is the later generated from the former?
oops. did not see your comments on the PR
just make the changes in README.yaml
, then execute these three commands (README.md
will be rebuilt automatically):
ok, the commands are in the comments
Seems like the README.md wasn’t rebuild in a while
yes
thanks for doing it
made the changes to readme

Hi, I came across you repo and projects for terraform, the label modules look pretty good, which one of the two you recommend me using for prod?
There is a terraform-terraform-label
and terraform-null-label
they all good for prod, diff implementation, and terraform-null-label
has much more features
if you need a simple label to uniquely name AWS resources, terraform-terraform-label
is good, just provide namespace
(your company name), stage
(prod, staging, dev) and name (your app or solution)
terraform-null-label
in addition has: context, re-order the label fields when generating the final ID
yep, I think these two modules are great to enforce the tag policy we have
yes, they both support tags
terraform-null-label
has more tag features (e.g. additional tags as lists of maps and output tags as lists of maps), which is useful for some AWS resources with ’non-standard` tagging scheme (e.g. auto-scaling group)
I know one is a forked of the other, are you planning on maintaining both?
yes, they are both maintained (and PRs are welcome )
I will for sure thanks for putting together this modules
