hi everyone
quick question
helmfiles:
- path: nginx-controller/helmfile.yaml
values:
- controller:
electionID: id2
ingressClass: nginxclass2
and the nginx-controller/helmfile.yaml file looks like this:
repositories:
- name: stable
url: <https://kubernetes-charts.storage.googleapis.com>
releases:
- name: sncr-ingress
namespace: ingress-nginx
chart: stable/nginx-ingress
version: 1.6.18
values:
- controller:
electionID: id1
after running helmfile template
I was expecting for controller.electionID: id2
values to be rendered.
however controller.electionID: id1
is rendered
do I have the wrong assumption? My understanding of the docs is that the last values wins when merging.

Hey @Erik Osterman (Cloud Posse) any chance we could have a specific channel for greeting messages? When the chat channel is filled like this it’s kind-of hard to have any type of conversation.
Possibly - though I’d like to discourage general conversation in this channel since there are over 1k people in it
But it would be nice maybe if GreetBot supports a daily update instead maybe
I will look into it.

Hi guys, I am using your ssh-key-gen module for generating ssh key pair via terraform (https://github.com/cloudposse/terraform-aws-key-pair). I keep was following through the example in readme, however I keep getting permission denied error for creating secrets
directory.
Error: mkdir /secrets: permission denied

Hi guys!
Nice to meet you again :slightly_smiling_face:
I have the question and hope you can help me.
So, my question is:
What is the difference between terragrunt
and general terraform modules that we made? Or this is absolute different concepts
I am confused…
long time no speak! welcome back
yes :( a lot of work. thank you
hi @s2504s nice to see you again
diff concepts
terragrunt is a wrapper on top of terraform, mostly to make TF code dryer
take a look at this from @Erik Osterman (Cloud Posse) https://www.reddit.com/r/Terraform/comments/afznb2/terraform_without_wrappers_is_awesome/
25 votes and 10 comments so far on Reddit
Thank you @Andriy Knysh (Cloud Posse) That is what I need
@s2504s I’m a fan of Terragrunt since a while as Terraform itself is not structurally solving the DRY issue, not counting in Workspaces. @Erik Osterman (Cloud Posse)’s reddit post is a little lie I think as what he describes requires extra tooling which I find to be similar to wrapping. Terragrunt is there to stay and solves it structurally, simple configuration files in HCL with references to git repositories make it easy for developer to collaborate and it offers built-in tricks for using different tfvars files. With Terragrunt there is no need for any scripting around it and I see that as a major plus.
the “built-in” tricks in the tfvars files is what breaks compatibility
i think I would have less of a problem with terragrunt if it worked more like astro
astro doesn’t overload tfvar files to break compatibility
Astro is a tool for managing multiple Terraform executions as a single command - uber/astro
that’s true @maarten, we just solve the same issues in different ways :slightly_smiling_face: Like terragrunt
, we use ref to Git repos, remote loading of modules, use tfvar files, etc.
yes, it requires extra tooling, but those are just Make and bash (and the structure of the projects)
so i guess it’s diff ways of doing same things
hey everyone give a warm welcome to @Jake Schneider! Good to have you here
i consider terragrunt a purpose-built task runner strictly for terraform
a task runner is something like make
or bazel
terragrunt
configurations only work with terragrunt
and basically have to be called using terragrunt
also checkout #terraform, #terragrunt channels
