Refined with chat so my request sounds more polished
Hi [sweetops—slackSite Admin’s Name],
I hope you’re doing well. I was browsing the channels and noticed there’s a lot of focus on cloud development, which is fantastic. However, I’m currently working on a project involving KVM hosts on Ubuntu bare metal, utilizing tools like QEMU, libvirt, virsh, and Cockpit. Specifically, I’m setting up VMs for pfSense, HAProxy, PostgreSQL, CouchDB replication, and other related components for data visualization.
Given the high cost of AWS compute for small businesses, I’m exploring the feasibility of using a few XPS desktops for this purpose. It’s a bit nostalgic, reminiscent of my days at Compaq, and also quite fun.
I was wondering if there’s an existing channel dedicated to bare metal virtualization configurations, or if it would be possible to create one? It would be great to have a space for discussions and knowledge sharing on this topic.
Thank you for your consideration!
Best regards, Garrett Fox
or if it would be possible to create one?
We try to avoid creating too many channels, as it’s difficult to get critical mass.

Hey everyone, I’m having questions around bare-metal provisioning? What tools are available to provision bare-metal at scale with ease ? I’ve checked tinkerbell, but it seems to be a lot of work and there seems to be some gap in the documentation. I also took a look at matchbox. it seems to have a terraform provider too and straight-forward to setup. Can someone help me in understanding what could be the best way for bare metal management and an OSS tool if they’re aware of. Also please feel free to point my message to the right channel/group. Thanks!
Designed for scalable provisioning of physical hardware, Tinkerbell is both open-source and cloud native. Contributed to the CNCF by Equinix Metal.
canonical has offered metal-as-a-service for quite a while, might be reasonably mature… https://maas.io/
MAAS (Metal as a Service) offers cloud style provisioning for physical servers. It is open source and free to use, with commercial support available from Canonical.
Yup, but I’m looking for some OSS, MAAS seems to be overkill for the amount of server provisioning we have
I’m pretty sure it is OSS, at least.

Does anyone know if there’s an open sourced project that helps with creating, managing, verifying licenses for products we create?
