Do any of you skip over candidates due to the length of their resume?

John Shiple FreelanceCTO avatar

I might…depends on how presented and designed. Also, if a bigger role, I might want more info. If it’s a reflection of the candidate not knowing the industry, not staying current, and they should know better by now…I might skip. For junior positions…how can it be long?

MattyB avatar

I work at a large company and see 5-10 page resumes every time we post reqs. I wonder if I’m filtering out candidates too early and by the wrong criteria.

Sebastian Stadil avatar

I wouldn’t skip over a candidate for such a reason, particularly if the resume goes into useful detail on the projects worked on, takeaways, and results.

Sounds like something’s bothering you about it though?

Chris Fowles avatar

i wouldn’t skip over it, but i’d be annoyed that they don’t understand how other people’s time works

one of my very best hires and also now a very good friend’s resume was extremely long - first thing i taught him after hiring him was how to add a summary to the detailed information he always provides

Chris Fowles avatar
Chris Fowles

what i really dislike is a resume that is long just due the the fact that it’s been tacked onto for the last 10 years without any cleanup - that screams to me that “this person never refactors”

haven’t had a real job for ages but I used to have a highlight section up top and then the more detailed job history but anything more than 3-4 pages seems excessive

MattyB avatar

@Sebastian Stadil The only thing that bothers me is the amount of time that’s wasted. I guess this is a bit of a PSA as well as a self check to see if my thinking is out of line.

i guess my answer succinctly would be - don’t disregard it just because it’s long, but feel free to bail out if it’s too long and not good

I read the first 4 pages, if you haven’t convinced me by then im moving on.

I think it depends on what data is there, and what kind of repetition there is…. There should be a strong summery and highlights.. Also it is long because they have 30 years in the business? Or because they have had 30 jobs in 10 years.. That in it’s self can be telling…

Technology changes fast, I would think 2-3 pages should suffice to let me know how you have relevant experience to the job you are applying for. After that, is it really adding value? I would not exclude anyone but I will loose interest and maybe miss key points you wanted to make.

Anyone done an interview with twitter for SRE role? Would love to know your experience if you’ve done that.
