Want to use atmos at scale? SweetOps with critical infrastructure? We have a small team where your value is not only impactful and appreciated, we are each of us the shareholders here. At Burns & McDonnell is employee-owned with a 120+ year history. Not a startup but we’re a mostly autonomous Platform Engineering/DevOps team so we are nimble and we innovate. We’ve been enjoying SweetOps for approaching two years. I’m looking for a few more people to build with us.
We have two job descriptions, and I hope that if you write terraform, especially if you love atmos like we do, that you’ll apply.

The mention of travel is for team gatherings, actual history of travel is rare and something to ask about if it’s a problem.

~Looking for a job that marries your DevOps work with a passion for wildlife and the outdoors?~~I’m looking for TWO tenacious mid-level DevOps engineer with a desire to help our company transition out of “start up” mode and continue our rapid growth at maximum efficiency. This position is fully remote! One of AWS fastest growing businesses, we are 100% AWS, almost 100% serverless, and adding multiple new product lines over the coming months. There are still plenty of manual operations to automate, and new services to wrangle and monitor. The DevOps team is new and growing, and we’re looking to “preach the gospel” to a team of devs used to deploying by hand.~~Apply directly on our (brand new) jobs portal, or through LinkedIn.~ ~here with~i class=”em em-question”></i> ~questions. I’ve been a member of the community at earlier jobs, but this time I’m back as a manager!~~Edit: we also have a *massive* ElasticSearch/OpenSearch cluster. Great fit for anyone with a passion for search technologies.~~Edit 2: Reminder that we have TWO (2) openings. Don’t be discouraged if you didn’t jump in the pool as soon as this went up. We’ll be working to fill these openings for a few weeks. As long as it’s up, there’s at least one open seat.~Filled, but I’d like to leave this post up with the note that one of my two roles was filled through another Slack channel very similar to this one, and I had more than one competitive candidate apply through this post here.
This board is not a black hole like LinkedIn or Indeed! This is a great resource! Thank you for being here!!
not accepting applications from candidates based in … California (CA)
Yeah, I was also very annoyed about that. The company is still growing, and I understand that it’s about which states we’re set up to comply with all the employment laws. I’m hoping that next time I come to the well I don’t have shackles around my ankles.
As an employer with CA employees who tried to self-administer HR via Gusto, I can empathize with not hiring in these states (note I was born and bred in Los Angeles). We switched to Justworks PEO (at employee recommendation), and now it’s a non-issue. We can hire anywhere and not worry about onboarding new states; absolutely it. But before that, dealing directly with states like OR, PA and CA was a PIA as a small company. Even Gusto struggled, evidenced by the fact we received notices (as many other Gusto customers) of payroll tax underpayments from OR that they couldn’t even figure out, but that we were liable for. My advice to other founders is, unless your long-term plans include an IPO, don’t manage payroll and compliance. Outsource it with a PEO. If you have exit plans, any company that acquires you will roll your employees into their own HR system, and your HR system is more of a liability than a differentiator.
