This is not an accurate representation of what is happening in the Nix community. The projects have needed more effective governance for a long time, and now there’s significant popular support behind building that. Eelco formally stepped down from his Foundation seat to make room for the new governance structure, and to finally end the incorrect idea that he’s BDFL - a position he never wanted in the first place, and which only existed in the sense that people who don’t know any better decided he must occupy. He still leads the Nix core team, and probably always will
