Hello Team - I have a lambda function reading credentails from secrets manager. Lambda function is in customer owned VPC and it has internet connectivity via NAT. Lambda function has permissions to read the secrets. But the function is timing out at client.get_secret_value(SecretId=secret_name). What else could cause this issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Increase the timeout and check if that helps. If you share some detailed log that can give some insights.
Hello Satish - Thanks for the response. I tried increasing the timeout value upto 8 mins and it still fails. I have retry config of 30 aswell. There isn’t anything much useful in the logs other than the logging statements I added to see where the timeout is happening.
Not sure if this could be helpful. Do you have any running instance in the vpc. If yes then log into the instance and try to get the secret from there using AWS cli. I think that would be a good starting point debugging this.
did you check cloudtrail for traces of the IAM entity trying to access secret manager? Should be possible to make the connection attempts visible there. You could probably rule out any permission issues. If no connection gets logged there you might want to look closer at the network layer.
are all your resources (lambda,vpc and secret) are on the same region?
also it is highly recommended to access your secret using VPC endpoint not using public internet though NAT, always try to use AWS backbone for security best practices
figured it out. One of the lambda subnets had 2 routes to internet via IGW and NAT. I think that was causing the conflict. I still don’t know why it was not working atleast 50% of the time as my other subnet was correct. Thanks for all the help guys.
