so we’ve invest a lot in our packages distribution over the past couple months

part of this was extending/refactoring the make based installer so we can support multiple packaging schemes

just to be clear, the make
based installer for packages is not going away

we rely on that extensively both in our build-harness and for customer local development environments

the apk
based packages are designed to provide an enhanced way for manging packages. the problem with the “make approach” is expressing package dependencies. in the end, we found ourself re-inventing the wheel, which is why we add support for a package manager.

in the future, we might add .deb
or .rpm
(@rohit.verma would dig this maybe?)

also, in the latest release, we’ve eliminated the duplication between /install
and /vendor
(which was part of the migration process for us to carry out this project)

Does anyone here use Packer to build custom AMI?

I should create a #packer channel - i see that coming up more often

that would be great

this was for https://github.com/cloudposse/packages
Cloud Posse installer and distribution of native apps, binaries and alpine packages - cloudposse/packages
